Short description of the EU Polis meeting
The project involves six municipalities from four European countries and concerns the organization of a conference and cultural activities that will take place in the Municipality of Aradippou in May 2010. Its general aim is to provide a context for interaction and dialogue between citizens as well as elected local representatives and members of Civil Society Organisations, on issues such as climate change, intercultural dialogue and active citizenship, amongst others. By constituting a space for the expression and exchange of experiences and ideas, the project would reinforce mutual knowledge and understanding between European citizens and cultures and would also help in the development of a sense of European identity.
In addition the conference will constitute a forum for discussing ways in which the active participation of citizens on the European level can be reinforced and will promote the initiation of common action between the participating Municipalities. In this way, it aims to contribute to fostering a sense of ownership of the EU amongst its citizens and to reinforce citizens' engagement with major European Union social issues.
This project places itself in continuation of a conference that took place last year in Mouresi and aims to continue the dialogue that was initiated as well as to introduce new issues of common concern. As such it will have 4 main themes for discussion:
1) The fight against climate change on the local level
2) The contribution of local authorities to the promotion of intercultural dialogue and the fight against racism and xenophobia
3) The role of civil society and youth organisations in promoting active European Citizenship
4) The role of local authorities in European Parliament elections and the promotion of participative democracy in Europe
Finally, the proposed project aims to provide a space where citizens will have the opportunity to enjoy cultural activities, develop friendships and also enjoy their stay in Cyprus.
