3rd EDITION OF MUNICIPAL NEWSPAPER

Mayor’s Greeting

Dear Fellow-citizens,
It is with great pleasure that I give you the 3rd edition of our municipal newspaper, which has already started making a remarkable course.
Being Lent, these are days of devoutness and meditation. These are days that bring us closer to one another and closer to God, by reliving Christ’s drama and aspiring to His resurrection and to the resurrection of our souls.
The Glorious Easter, the Greek Easter stands out among other holidays because of its acts which are full of mystery and divine rites. Hope and faith. These are the two aims of Easters traditions and which are fortunately saved until nowadays. It is a great pleasure for everyone to experience them.  However, every year we witness some sad events related to some children, who use firecrackers, fireworks and other similar things, and who are severely injured and end up amputated or even dead. I would like to alert all of you about this. We all have to protect our children to avoid grieving over more victims.
As we reach the peak of Christs drama, the resurrection message brings redemption to all of us and  also sends us a message. The Resurrection reunites our people with their roots and strengthens their beliefs. Especially these days the Orthodox people around the globe are experiencing this joyful message, and our minds go out to our emigrant fellow-citizens who, during these holy days, are away from the love and warmth of their homeland. I wish a Happy Easter to all of you, may you all have happiness and health, and may each and every one of you feel the true meaning of the Resurrection inside him. May you feel the plenitude and the optimism that Christ’s Resurrection brings to us and may love fill our souls.

MAYOR’S SPEECH

FUNERAL OF THE HERO DEMETRIS SIZINOS10/1/2007

It is a heavy responsibility and an unbearable debt for one to address, after 34 long years, a hero who was sacrificed in the name of our island’s freedom.

We are gathered here today in this holy place to pay our respects and express our gratitude to one of the heroes of Cypriot freedom, Demetris Sizinos, a true child of Cyprus, who was unmanly killed by the Attila, the dark summer of 1974.

That summer Demetris, along with some of his fellow villagers were enclave in Gipsou, taking care of the women and children that were there, too. After the 1st of September, he and some other men were taken by the Turks to be carried to Turkey. However, at a stop they made at Tziaos, Demetris and seven more men were dragged down of the tracks carrying them and ever since they had been missing until recently.  The Sizinos family that had been already mourning the loss of their son Giorgos, who was also killed during those days trying to protect his country, now lost the head of the family. Demetris was the model of a hard working and respectable family man, a scrupulous man and a good citizen.

Today Demetris officially joins those martyrs of freedom and enters the Pantheon of the courageous men who died protecting the freedom and dignity of our small country.

The ever memorable Demetris may rest in peace, because he proved himself worthy to his own country. We are honoured and proud that this hero is buried today in Aradippou. We consider him as our own child, like his village Gipsou does. May his sacrifice become a beacon of resistance and militancy for our people.

Today we salute Demetris and gratefully honour his memory. We are deeply aware that we are forever in dept to him and we promise that we will try to repay it. We will not stop fighting until freedom and peace are secured

My dear Demetris’ wife and children,

You should feel proud knowing that among your family there is a special person who paid his debt to his country in the most honorable manner.

You should feel blessed for having lived next to this man.

Our memorable hero,

We kneel here today before your body and we promise to keep your memory alive forever.

We are sure that God’s fair judgment will place your soul next to your beloved son Giorgos, and we hope that He will give comfort to and console your family.
May his name live forever
